Hello! I’m Julianne Sandlin, or Dr. J as students often call me.
Teaching Art History
I’ve been teaching college-level art history courses since the early 2000s, joining 抖阴福利导航 as full-time faculty in 2011. In addition to teaching, I also serve as the Faculty Department Chair for Art History and coordinate 抖阴福利导航’s art collection.
I teach a variety of classes at 抖阴福利导航, including online and face-to-face (usually at the Sylvania campus).聽 Courses I regularly teach include Understanding Architecture (ART 101), Understanding the Visual Arts (ART 102), the Global Art History sequence (ART 204, 205, and 206), the History of American Residential Architecture (ART 215), and the History of Chinese Art (ART 208).
About Me
I grew up in North Carolina and was first introduced to art history as an elective while getting a degree in Interior Design at Appalachian State University. I immediately loved learning art history, but it was only after some dead-end jobs that I decided to go back to school to study it. I ended up getting a PhD in art and architectural history from Florida State University in 2009, and I moved to Portland in 2011 for this job.
Moving to Oregon was an excellent decision! My family and I enjoy getting out in the natural beauty of the state and going camping, hiking, and kayaking (maybe even looking for that elusive Bigfoot encounter!). Plus I don’t miss the bugs, snakes, and humidity of the south.
Outside of teaching, I like going for walks, watching dystopian shows with my son, and reading fiction (some of my all-time favorite books include One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Stand, His Dark Materials聽trilogy, and聽Pride and Prejudice). My other major interest is traveling! The above photo is me in a very old castle in France.
I also have two cats, Bertie and Max. They both like to show up in Zoom meetings!
