Details about this class

Welcome to French 101 (remote)! I look forward to a great term with you!
(*Below is general course information. For more details, please review the )

Placement:
French 101 is for true beginners. Most students having completed 1-2 years in High School still place into FR 101 at the college level due to the immersion and accelerated format and they usually really appreciate the review and getting to start and finish the program with the same student group for the whole 2 years. However, if you’re unsure of placement, please contact me prior to the term or by the end of the first week at the latest to see if you can place at a higher level (stephanie.deforest@pcc.edu)

Attendance requirements:
FR 101 is a 4 credit course with two remote classes via Zoom per week Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-10:50pm. Each class session includes the teaching of new material and lots of in-class practice with other students. Attendance at these classes is required; however, students can make up to 2 "excused" absences (within a week) by watching a recorded Zoom class, recording themselves doing all of the activities and emailing it to me. *Please note: 4 or more "unexcused" absences will result in an automatic non passing grade.

This class will continue as FR 102 in the winter and FR 103 in the spring. Please note: completion of 2 years of a language at the college level is required for a Bachelor of Arts degree and 2 terms will count towards the Gen Ed requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree. Please consult with an advisor from a 4 year university if you have questions about transferability (e.g. PSU, U of O, etc.).

Class structure:
In class, I’ll introduce new material and we’ll practice it together as a whole class and in small groups. The course will be taught in full French immersion, so you’ll hear and speak French as much as possible. It's a great way to learn a language! Improving speaking proficiency is a primary goal of this class, and we’ll have fun practicing together while incorporating cultural components, games, and music…all in French!

Time commitment:
The time commitment for this course includes 4 hours of in person instruction plus another 3-4 hours a week spent on studying and completing homework assignments per week.

Textbook requirements:
We use the French textbook and online website Espaces (6th edition) for BOTH FR 101-102-103 AND FR 201-202-203 and the online access is valid for 24 months using the same login and password.

New students will need to purchase the materials via 抖阴福利导航 Sylvania bookstore. The looseleaf textbook and code for the website are for purchase via the 抖阴福利导航 Sylvania Bookstore in person or online (/bookstore/). Just enter the CRN or Espaces and select the 6th edition. If you purchase in person you can redeem the code that comes with the book for the website where all the homework is immediately. If you purchase online they will ship it ground to you; however, you can still get access to the website and homework for 2 weeks. *Do not purchase a used code as it will expire before your classes are finished.

Once you have purchased the book/code (or if you need access to the virtual textbook and homework until you get your book), you will set up a student account via  and enroll in the CRN for your course/school/instructor. Then on your D2L course page, under the "content" tab and "Table of Contents", select VHL-LTI and link the book website to your D2L account. That will import access to the website platform so that all of your assignments, grades, etc. are accessible on D2L. Detailed instructions are in the

If you are waiting on your textbook, you should follow the instructions in the syllabus to set up your account on www.vhlcentral.com for Espaces and skip redeeming the code and I will then grant you access as of the first day of the term.

Student success:
Students who have taken French classes at 抖阴福利导航 really appreciate how we make learning French in immersion accessible and fun and how much they can understand and say even after just one week of classes! I’m happy to report that students attain excellent levels of oral, written, and listening proficiency and are very successful in higher level classes at a 4 year university. I would love to have you as part of this class!

A bientôt! (See you soon!)
