Details about this class

Thank you for interest in CH151!

This course will be delivered in-person at the Sylvania Campus. This class will involve a combination of lectures and in-class group activities. While this class will have lectures, most of the learning in the class will happen through the in-class group activities. These activities will allow you to build your understanding through problem solving and discussion with your peers. While many students are sceptical of this approach at first, many find it to be the most engaging and useful aspect of the course. However, for it all to work, we need a strong classroom community with active participation from everyone during class. I think that you will find this kind of class more helpful and fun than a lecture-based class.

In-order for you and your peers to get the most out of the class, students will be expected to attend each class at the time listed and to actively participate. Course content will be delivered in a week-by-week module approach. Each week's content will be contained within a separate module. Office hours will be held during the week to support student learning.

Homework will be completed using the Modified Mastering Chemistry (MMC) platform. Temporary access to the MMC platform, which includes an electronic copy of the text, will be provided for the first two weeks while you determine the best purchase option for you. Please wait until after the first day of class to purchase anything. The access code for MMC that includes an electronic copy of the textbook can be purchased directly from the publisher at a lower price than from the bookstore. I will provide additional information on the first day of class. In-class activities will be provided as handouts during class.

Technology

I suggest that you have access to a computer for the online homework. It can be done on a mobile device, but that is typically more difficult.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.

Students with disabilities

Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.
