This course will be delivered in-person at the Sylvania Campus. This class will involve a combination of lectures and in-class group activities. While this class will have lectures, most of the learning in the class will happen through the in-class group activities. These activities will allow you to build your understanding through problem solving and discussion with your peers. While many students are sceptical of this approach at first, many find it to be the most engaging and useful aspect of the course. However, for it all to work, we need a strong classroom community with active participation from everyone during class. I think that you will find this kind of class more helpful and fun than a lecture-based class.

In-order for you and your peers to get the most out of the class, students will be expected to attend each class at the time listed and to actively participate. Course content will be delivered in a week-by-week module approach. Each week's content will be contained within a separate module that includes completing activities, taking notes from the textbook readings, and additional homework. Office hours will be held during the week to support student learning. 

Students do not need to purchase a textbook or online homework program for this course. The course textbook is available online and can be previewed using the link in the course materials box on this page. Online homework will be delivered through homework program WeBWorK. Students will need to purchase a workbook that will be used frequently during class meetings and as additional homework. We will use “General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry: A Guided Inquiry, 2nd Edition.” You can get this from the Sylvania bookstore or another campus bookstore for nearly the same price as from the publisher. You can also find this book on Amazon. Do not buy a used copy! It is a workbook that you write in. 

This class is delivered alongside a 1-credit laboratory course, CH 124Z. Co-enrollment in both the lecture and linked lab section is required. 

Registered students who do not attend BOTH the first lecture during Week 1 in CH 104Z AND the first lab during Week 1 in linked CH 124Z will be dropped from BOTH courses as a no show. Students cannot add either of these courses in Week 2.

The course will be using an OER textbook and WeBWorK homework. No purchase of these is necessary for these materials. An internet connection and computer will be required.
