Addendum to Course Description

This course provides a foundation of general maintenance practices found in industrial and institutional facilities. Concepts include safety practices common in the industrial setting, introduces hazardous materials handling, and the inter-action of building systems. The importance of tools and equipment as applied properly by maintenance technicians is stressed.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Be introduced to industrial safety hazards, OSHA safety practices and be familiar with pre-task planning.

  • Be introduced to maintenance and service principles including maintenance career fields, maintenance planning and management, maintenance types, code compliance, material properties, fasteners, bearings, couplings, drivebelts, sealing systems, lubrication, shaft alignment, basic troubleshooting, basic hand and power tool usage.

  • Be introduced to common facilities systems and their inter-relationships including HVAC systems, valves, pumps and basic piping systems, boilers, heating and cooling systems, basic stationary refrigeration systems and refrigerant handling practices, compressed air systems and pneumatic controls, mechanical drivetrains, heat transfer concepts, operational energy efficiency, PLCs and SCADA systems.

Course Activities and Design

Lectures are designed around the textbook and handouts prepared by the instructor.

Students will participate in classroom discussion and get to handle components on display during class and see actual applications of systems in the training center facilities lab.

Students will complete take-home work assignments based on the text for grading.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The learner will complete two written examinations, complete class assignments, lab project(s) if applicable, and with a minimum average score of 70%. This will provide evidence of learning the concepts and skills identified during lecture and lecture/lab activities.
